BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FRCN NATIONAL CHOIR

The history of the FRCN National choir dates back to the early sixties under the leadership of Sir Lawrence Emeka (MON).

The choir first started as the Enugu musical Society and by 1970 it metarmophosed into the NBC Enugu Choir. According to Prof Richard Okafor the choir started in the third week of November 1970.

We remember with nostalgia, the popular dance tune for which the Enugu Choir was known – “Enenebe Ejeghi Olu” arranged by Late Alphonso Okosa. It was Alphonso Okosa, fondly known as ANGO, who took over the leadership of the NBC Enugu Choir and managed it from 1970 to 1981. Late Rev. Canon David Okongu then received the baton of leadership of the NBC Enugu choir from ANGO and in 1985 the leadership of the Choir was handed over to Kenneth Idemili, who is the choir director to this day.

The NBC Choir under the directorship of Kenneth Idemili has maintained a leading position among the other choir and band in the Corporation, such that in recognition of its performance during the golden jubilee celebration of FRCN in Enugu and Abuja in 2001, the then DG Dr Eddie Iroh rechristened the NBC Enugu choir as “FRCN National Choir” to refect its national status.

AIM:

Sustaining the FRCN National choir is in tune with the FRCN corporate goal of “Uplifting the people and uniting the nation”. The choir which renders its music in six Nigerian languages is a sure way of uniting the country through music.

ACHIEVEMENTS/PERFORMANCES :

The Choir has performed creditably at national and international events. The Choir is well known for its Unique outings at the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carol at the Zonal and National levels. The Choir held forte at the democracy day celebrations of the last civilian administration and at the inauguration of the present administration in 2007.
The choir had the singular honour of playing during the funeral rites of the late Minister for Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

In 1977 the choir performed at Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) and also performed in Ghana in the same year.

The choir has today (6/11/080 made a formal presentation of its debut CD, captioned NAIJALAND. This six tracker contains indigenous music in Hausa, Yoruba, Ibo and Efik. It is a must listen to all lovers of good music according to a renowned professor of music, Laz Ekwueme (IGWE !)

The FRCN National Choir is there to for you now and always to give you the best of entertainment at your social functions. The representative of HE, The Governor of IMO State was so thrilled at the performances of the FECN national choir that he gave them an instant invitation to play for the Governor in Owerri in two weeks time.

RECORDING AND PRESENTATION OF THE CD:

How it started: Radio Nigeria Investment Ltd (RNIL) was incorporated on 21st September 2006 with a share holding capital of N1m. It is solely owned by FRCN.

Its mandate include the generation of non air time revenue to mellow down the effect of dwindling allocation from Government due to commercialization.

Management of this company was therefore challenged to take over the management of the FRCN National Choir as well as the moribund Unity Band in Abuja and the dormant Ibadan Choir by the then DG Mr. Ben Egbuna mni.

The Managing Director of RNIL , Mr. Mike Yawe in accepting the challenge also promised to take the band to the next level, culminating into what we have witnessed today (CD LAUNCH). The MD also promised to revive the Abuja Unity band and the FRCN Ibadan choir.

RADIO NIGERIA INVESTMENT LTD ENTERS INTO A BARTER CONTRACT WITH KOK VISIBILITY LTD.

Radio Nigeria Investment Ltd (RNIL) in its drive to utilize all available non air avenues to generate additional revenue for the Corporation has gone into negotiations with KOK Visibility Ltd on how to use the walls of Radio House fence as advert space for their clients.

KOK is an outdoor advertising firm with years of hands on experience in Corporate brand image.

The contract when finally signed will be a barter arrangement that will make RNIL become owners of a brand new KIA Cerato car in exchange for the said spaces for the period of one year.

The car will ease transportation needs of the company as well as enhance its Corporate image.

Managing Director of the Company, Mr Mike Yawe in a chat with Radio Connect said the Legal department of the Corporation is putting final touches to the MOU, which he said is been eagerly awaited by both companies.

We (RNIL) have also kept our promise of getting Platinum Savings Ltd to open negotiations with staff on houses at lower rates at the Kuje housing estate. Staff can check notice boards for details.

BANKING AT YOUR DOORSTEP IN RADIO HOUSE

The symbiotic relationship between Radio Nigeria Investment Ltd (RNIL) and United Bank for Africa (UBA) has gone a step further as an MOU signed between the two companies has brought banking to the doorstep of staffers in Radio House.

UBA now offers Banking services through its customer services desk at Radio House in addition to the ATM installed at the ground floor. This is to reduce the time spent by staff in obtaining banking services outside the Corporation’s premises as the banks officer’s are on standby to attend to customers.
Accounts opening processes, customer complaints as well as routine Banking services are part of the package offered at the Customers services desk.

The MD of RNIL Mr Mike Yawe in a chat with Radio Connect enjoined staff to give feedback to Management of both companies on their expectations, and feedback on the quality of services rendered at the desk, to enable us further improves on its services.
He concluded with this caveat “Feedback is the breakfast of Champions”, so please feed us back.

ENUGU FRCN CHOIR RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM

The scintillating performances of the Enugu Choir band has been put up in a soon to be released CD.

The choir which has played consistently at the last six editions of democracy day celebrations in Abuja and Carol of Nine lessons has received accolades from the publics both low and high in the society.

The six tracks CD sponsored by Radio Nigeria Investment Ltd (RNIL) has as its title “NAIJALAND” and is due for release anytime soon and will be launched in Enugu the home base of the band. The album features tracks in the main three languages of Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba to symbolize its National spread.

Managing Director of RNIL Mr Mike Yawe in a chat with Radio House said this is a milestone in the life of the band and a wake up call for other bands within the stable of FRCN, particularly Broadwaves band based in Abuja and the Ibadan Choir band.

According to the MD, the CD will be marketed through designated sales outlets, four National Stations and the 32 FM stations. Sales commissions will be paid to staff for any sales made.

Mr Yawe appealed to the FM stations to promote the CD on their stations on release and also stated that Jingles have been developed to herald the pre and post launch activities.
