30-07-2010

The chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Electoral matters, Alhaji Musa Adar has urged the chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega to rise up to the critical task of ensuring a successful election in 2011.

Alhaji Musa said only credible and generally acceptable election could restore the diminishing faith of Nigerians in the electoral process.

At an interactive meeting with the INEC Management, the Law Maker enjoined Professor Jega to utilize the leverage created by the National Assembly in the removal of all sections pertaining to electoral matters and vesting same in the 2010 Electoral Act.

He explained that the 2010 Electoral Act recently passed had amended all relevant sections likely to impede the conduct of a smooth election.

In a remark, the INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega told the committee that the commission wanted to procure the Direct Data Capturing Machine from the manufacturer and would therefore need a waiver.

The INEC Chairman said, if fund was released to the commission by the middle of August, compilation of voters register would be concluded ahead of the 2011 elections.
